DIY - Jazz up your pin board as a necklace display

Here's a quick DIY for your next rainy winter day. If, like me, you've accumulated a few necklaces in your thrifting adventures, you'll understand the problem that comes with storage and display. Even on some of the modern racks you can buy today, you'll run into a problem with tangled chains. Added to that, the necklace you want ALWAYS seems to be at the back of the pile.

So that led me to my plan to upcycle this old pin up board with material I scored at the Salvos last month.

What do you think? The final piece looks great against a shelf in my bedroom and adds a splash of colour to the decor.

Step 1: Grab your average pin board, I dug this one up from my shed... it had been harbouring a small dust army for a few years. If you don't already have one at your disposal, don't fret - you can buy these everywhere.
I spotted this leftover material at the Salvation Army last month, and it's huge! I wanted something mostly plain with a small pattern for effect - so this was perfect.
Cut your material to fit the size of the board with some overlap. I used a staple gun to fix it to the back of the board.
Don't forget to pick up some pins! (Check out those messy necklaces with no home... yet!)

Incidentally... I'm looking for a new project to use up the remainder of my fabric. Any ideas?
if you have any DIY projects you'd like to see in a future post, leave me a comment!

Thrifty finds: Girls just wanna have funds

Did I need this coin purse? Not necessarily. Buuuuuut... I've been using the cutest London-styled coin purse from Harrods, courtesy of one of my nearest and dearest friends (and fellow blogger,) Liv of Worlds Waiting. Do check her out, she's a delight. In justification, of course... I have a casual evening job that requires me to carry a small handbag. It's always better when your coins don't go flying around, so having the occasional coin purse to swap in and out does come in handy.

And so, I'd like to declare this beautiful, albeit slightly eclectic coin purse a gorgeous addition to my burgeoning collection (see: two). The back looks just like an envelope and is Sealed With A Loving Kiss (S.W.A.L.K). At least, that's what I'm hoping it stands for!

What more can you say about a coin purse that looks like an old-fashioned letter? Of course, it feels like leather and the stamps have not been printed, but sewn on! This little beauty is produced by Disaster Design. You can find more of these very cute designs on their sales site, Temptation Gifts. I couldn't help but fall in love with this because I'm a bit of a sucker for old-school style with a modern twist.

Not bad for $1.50 (Salvation Army).

What's been your best bag find at a secondhand store?

Thrifty finds: Life is too short to wear boring jewellery

Let's kick it off with the one thing girls generally can't resist - a nice necklace! If there's one thing you should never miss in secondhand shops, it's the jewellery rack. I couldn't resist snapping up these gorgeous vintage-style pieces in Perth - especially because the prices were so good. Quirky pieces like these are usually buried in packed racks of other donated jewels. And as we all know, necklace chains have this insatiable urge to tangle themselves into the most crazy mess with other pieces. Sometimes I think the stores hide the best finds at the back - it's certainly how I've found most of my thrifted jewels.

So be patient, it's worth the wait. Dig deep <3

These pieces represent a few loves of mine. The first pendant was just sparkly enough to grab my attention. It's a statement piece but isn't too over the top. I've had it a few weeks now. The first time I wore it out was on top of a mustard coloured blouse and I received a stack of compliments. Plus, who can go past the heart shape?

I love natural textures, so the wooden beaded necklace was a bit of a steal. It's a shorter necklace that sits high up, so looks great with high-necked blouses or plain dresses. I love that you can roll the beads around - it's a really fun one.

Lastly, another addition to my Tree of Life necklace collection (and more on that later too!) was the final necklace. I loved the colours and the vintage look. Because I wear a lot of plain colours it's nice to have a few statement pieces to change the look.

Have you found a favourite necklace in a secondhand shop?

The low-down:
Heart necklace - Whitford Salvos - $2.25
Wooden beaded necklace - Vinnies Retro Northbridge Shop, Perth - $4
Tree of Life necklace - Vinnies Innaloo - $3.25
